Li Shangyin The Leyou Tombs

With twilight shadows in my heart

I have driven up among the Leyou Tombs

To see the sun, for all his glory,

Buried by the coming night.

“Oan Lí Se̍k Koa” Chhòa Chìnhong

Oan Lí hū, It hô kang, Put sū chhân sáng hòe lí hông.

Cha̍p chí chhiam chhiam ji̍t chò khó͘, Tek chu che̍k í hōng ko͘ ong.

Sit put ti bī bang put ham, Jîn tiōng seⁿ lú put seⁿ lâm.

Seⁿ lâm koán hiòng phû liông khì, Seⁿ lú tiâu tiâu hōng chí kam.

Kin ji̍t put oân bêng ji̍t chit, Bêng ji̍t put oân kè í se̍k.

Kun put kiàn, Chhian tiâu bān lú khí hoe bûn, Cho͘  sêng hùi chin bí jîn la̍t

Liu Zongyuan “River Snow”

A hundred mountains and no bird,

A thousand paths without a footprint;

A little boat, a bamboo cloak,

An old man fishing in the cold river-snow.

Tó tó phû hûn kòa chhiū siau

Tó tó phû hûn kòa chhiū siau

Tó tó phû hûn kòa chhiū siau

Bōe am ko͘ sit sèng,

Seng khián sió ko͘  tam.

Wang Jian “A Bride”

On the third day, taking my place to cook,

Washing my hands to make the bridal soup,

I decide that not my mother-in-law

But my husband's young sister shall have the fiat taste.

Wang Wei “One Hearted”

When those red berries come in spring time,

Flushing on your southland branches,

Take home an armful, for my sake,

As a symbol of our love.

Li Shangyin To One unnamed III

Li Shangyin “To One unnamed III”

Siong kiàn sî lân pia̍t iā lân, Tang hong bô la̍t pah hoe chân.

Chhun siân kàu sí si hong chīn, La̍h kū sêng hoe lūi sí kan.

Hiáu kiàⁿ tān chhiû hûn pìn kái, Iā gîm eng kak goe̍h kng hân.

Phông lâi chhú khì bô to lō͘, Chheng chiáu in khîn ûi thàm khòaⁿ.

Time was long before I met her, but is longer since we parted,

And the east wind has arisen and a hundred flowers are gone,

And the silk-worms of spring will weave until they die

And every night the candles will weep their wicks away.

Mornings in her mirror she sees her hair-cloud changing,

Yet she dares the chill of moonlight with her evening song.

...It is not so very far to her Enchanted Mountain

O blue-birds, be listening!-Bring me what she says!

Du Fu A View of the Wilderness Tông si Tō͘ Hú Iá bōng

Tông si Tō͘  Hú “Iá bōng”

Du Fu “A View of the Wilderness”

Se san pe̍h soat saⁿ siâⁿ sù, Lâm phó͘ chheng kang bān lí kiô.

Hái lāi hong tîn chu tē keh, Thian gâi thè lūi chi̍t sin iâu.

Ûi chiòng bō͘  kiong to pīⁿ, Bī ū koan ai tap sèng tiâu.

Khoa bé chhut kau sî ke̍k bo̍k, Put kham jîn sū ji̍t siau tiâu.

Snow is white on the westward mountains and on three fortified towns,

And waters in this southern lake flash on a long bridge.

But wind and dust from sea to sea bar me from my brothers;

And I cannot help crying, I am so far away.

I have nothing to expect now but the ills of old age.

I am of less use to my country than a grain of dust.

I ride out to the edge of town. I watch on the horizon,

Day after day, the chaos of the world.

Du Fu Welcome to Guess Arrival Tông si Tō͘ Hú Kheh chì

Tông si Tō͘  Hú “Kheh chì”

Du Fu “Welcome to Guess Arrival”

Siá lâm sià pak kai chhun chúi, Tān kiàn kûn o͘ ji̍t ji̍t lâi.

Hoa kèng put chêng iân kheh sàu, Phông mn̂g kin sí ūi kun khui.

Phoân sun chhī oán bô kiam bī, Chun chiú ka pîn chí kū phoe.

Khéng í lîn ong siōng tùi ím, Kek lî ho͘ chhù chin î poe.

North of me, south of me, spring is in flood,

Day after day I have seen only gulls....

My path is full of petals -- I have swept it for no others.

My thatch gate has been closed -- but opens now for you.

It's a long way to the market, I can offer you little --

Yet here in my cottage there is old wine for our cups.

Shall we summon my elderly neighbour to join us,

Call him through the fence, and pour the jar dry?

Li Shangyin Thoughts in the Cold Tông si Lí Siongún Liâng sù

Tông si Lí Siongún “Liâng sù”

Li Shangyin “Thoughts in the Cold”

Kheh khì pho pêng lām, siân hiu lō͘ boán ki.

Éng hoâi tong chhú cheh, Í li̍p chū î sî.

Pak táu kiam chhun oán, Lâm lêng ú sái tī.

Thian gâi chiàm bang sò͘ , Gî gō͘  iú sin ti.

You are gone. The river is high at my door.

Cicadas are mute on dew-laden boughs.

This is a moment when thoughts enter deep.

I stand alone for a long while.

...The North Star is nearer to me now than spring,

And couriers from your southland never arrive --

Yet I doubt my dream on the far horizon

That you have found another friend.
