Du Fu A View of the Wilderness Tông si Tō͘ Hú Iá bōng

Tông si Tō͘  Hú “Iá bōng”

Du Fu “A View of the Wilderness”

Se san pe̍h soat saⁿ siâⁿ sù, Lâm phó͘ chheng kang bān lí kiô.

Hái lāi hong tîn chu tē keh, Thian gâi thè lūi chi̍t sin iâu.

Ûi chiòng bō͘  kiong to pīⁿ, Bī ū koan ai tap sèng tiâu.

Khoa bé chhut kau sî ke̍k bo̍k, Put kham jîn sū ji̍t siau tiâu.

Snow is white on the westward mountains and on three fortified towns,

And waters in this southern lake flash on a long bridge.

But wind and dust from sea to sea bar me from my brothers;

And I cannot help crying, I am so far away.

I have nothing to expect now but the ills of old age.

I am of less use to my country than a grain of dust.

I ride out to the edge of town. I watch on the horizon,

Day after day, the chaos of the world.

Du Fu Welcome to Guess Arrival Tông si Tō͘ Hú Kheh chì

Tông si Tō͘  Hú “Kheh chì”

Du Fu “Welcome to Guess Arrival”

Siá lâm sià pak kai chhun chúi, Tān kiàn kûn o͘ ji̍t ji̍t lâi.

Hoa kèng put chêng iân kheh sàu, Phông mn̂g kin sí ūi kun khui.

Phoân sun chhī oán bô kiam bī, Chun chiú ka pîn chí kū phoe.

Khéng í lîn ong siōng tùi ím, Kek lî ho͘ chhù chin î poe.

North of me, south of me, spring is in flood,

Day after day I have seen only gulls....

My path is full of petals -- I have swept it for no others.

My thatch gate has been closed -- but opens now for you.

It's a long way to the market, I can offer you little --

Yet here in my cottage there is old wine for our cups.

Shall we summon my elderly neighbour to join us,

Call him through the fence, and pour the jar dry?

Li Shangyin Thoughts in the Cold Tông si Lí Siongún Liâng sù

Tông si Lí Siongún “Liâng sù”

Li Shangyin “Thoughts in the Cold”

Kheh khì pho pêng lām, siân hiu lō͘ boán ki.

Éng hoâi tong chhú cheh, Í li̍p chū î sî.

Pak táu kiam chhun oán, Lâm lêng ú sái tī.

Thian gâi chiàm bang sò͘ , Gî gō͘  iú sin ti.

You are gone. The river is high at my door.

Cicadas are mute on dew-laden boughs.

This is a moment when thoughts enter deep.

I stand alone for a long while.

...The North Star is nearer to me now than spring,

And couriers from your southland never arrive --

Yet I doubt my dream on the far horizon

That you have found another friend.

Li Shangyin “A Cicada”

Pún í ko lân pá, Tô͘ lô hīn hùi siaⁿ.

Gō͘ keⁿ so͘ beh tn̄g, Chi̍t chhiū phek bô chêng.

Po̍h hoān kēng iû hoàn, kò͘ hn̂g bû í pêⁿ.

Hoân kun chòe siōng kéng, Góa iā kú ka chheng.

All night long you have sung in vain --

Oh, this final broken indrawn breath

Among the green indifferent trees!

Yes, I have gone like a piece of driftwood,

I have let my garden fill with weeds....

I bless you for your true advice

To live as pure a life as yours.

Zhang Jiuling Looking at thw Noom and Thinking of One Far Away

Tông si Tiuⁿ Kiúlêng “Bōng goe̍h hoâi oān”

Zhang Jiuling Looking at thw Noom and Thinking of One Far Away

Hái siōng seⁿ bêng goe̍h, Thian gâi kiong chhú sî.

Chêng jîn oàn iâu iā, Kèng se̍k khí siuⁿ si.

Bia̍t chiok lîn kng boán, Phi I kak lō͘ chu.

Put kham êng chhiú chēng, Hoân chhím bang ka kî.

The moon, grown full now over the sea,

Brightening the whole of heaven,

Brings to separated hearts

The long thoughtfulness of night....

It is no darker though I blow out my candle.

It is no warmer though I put on my coat.

So I leave my message with the moon

And turn to my bed, hoping for dreams.

Li Bai The Hard Road Tông si Lí Pe̍h Kiâⁿ lō͘ lân chi it

Tông si Lí Pe̍h “Kiâⁿ lō͘ lân chi it”

Li Bai “The Hard Road”

Kim chun chheng chiú táu cha̍p chheng, Ge̍k pôaⁿ tin siu tat bān chhián.

Thêng poe tâu tū put lêng sit, Poa̍t kiàm sù kò͘  sim bông jiân.

Beh tō͘ N̂g hô peng sat chhoan, Chiòng teng thài hang seh àm thian.

Hân lâi sûi tiàu phek khe siōng, Hut ho̍k sêng chiu bang ji̍t piⁿ.

Kiâⁿ lō͘ lânHêng lō͘ lân

To khî lō͘, Kim an chāi

Tńg hong phò͘ long ē ū sî, Ti̍t kòa hûn hoân ché chhong hái.

Pure wine costs, for the golden cup, ten thousand coppers a flagon,

And a jade plate of dainty food calls for a million coins.

I fling aside my food-sticks and cup, I cannot eat nor drink....

I pull out my dagger, I peer four ways in vain.

I would cross the Yellow River, but ice chokes the ferry;

I would climb the Taihang Mountains, but the sky is blind with snow....

I would sit and poise a fishing-pole, lazy by a brook --

But I suddenly dream of riding a boat, sailing for the sun....

Journeying is hard,

Journeying is hard.

There are many turnings --

Which am I to follow?....

I will mount a long wind some day and break the heavy waves

And set my cloudy sail straight and bridge the deep, deep sea.

Wang Wei “A Song of Peach blossom River”

Chē khòaⁿ âng chhiū put ti oán, Hêng chin chheng khe put kiàn lâng.

San kháu chhiâm hêng si oe ò, Soaⁿ khui khòng bōng soân pêng lio̍k.

Iâu khòaⁿ chi̍t chhù chàn hûn chhiū, Kīn ji̍p chhian ka sàn hoa tek.

Chiâu kheh chho͘ thoân hàn sèⁿ miâ, Ku jîn bī kái chin I ho̍k.

Ku jîn kiōng chū bú lêng goân, hoân chiông bu̍t gōa khí chhân hn̂g.

Pêng bêng lû hang sàu hoe khai, Po̍h bō͘  hî chiâu sêng chúi ji̍p.

Folk-song-styled-verse          Wang Wei       A SONG OF PEACH-BLOSSOM RIVER

A fisherman is drifting, enjoying the spring mountains,

And the peach-trees on both banks lead him to an ancient source.

Watching the fresh-coloured trees, he never thinks of distance

Till he comes to the end of the blue stream and suddenly- strange men!

It's a cave-with a mouth so narrow that he has to crawl through;

But then it opens wide again on a broad and level path --

And far beyond he faces clouds crowning a reach of trees,

And thousands of houses shadowed round with flowers and bamboos....

Woodsmen tell him their names in the ancient speech of Han;

And clothes of the Qin Dynasty are worn by all these people

Living on the uplands, above the Wuling River,

On farms and in gardens that are like a world apart,

Their dwellings at peace under pines in the clear moon,

Until sunrise fills the low sky with crowing and barking.

...At news of a stranger the people all assemble,

And each of them invites him home and asks him where he was born.

Alleys and paths are cleared for him of petals in the morning,

And fishermen and farmers bring him their loads at dusk....

They had left the world long ago, they had come here seeking refuge;

They have lived like angels ever since, blessedly far away,

No one in the cave knowing anything outside,

Outsiders viewing only empty mountains and thick clouds.

...The fisherman, unaware of his great good fortune,

Begins to think of country, of home, of worldly ties,

Finds his way out of the cave again, past mountains and past rivers,

Intending some time to return, when he has told his kin.

He studies every step he takes, fixes it well in mind,

And forgets that cliffs and peaks may vary their appearance.

...It is certain that to enter through the deepness of the mountain,

A green river leads you, into a misty wood.

But now, with spring-floods everywhere and floating peachpetals --

Which is the way to go, to find that hidden source?

Meng Haoran A Spring Morning Tông si Bēng Hōjiân Chhun hiáu

Tông si Bēng Hōjiân “Chhun hiáu”

Meng Haoran “A Spring Morning”

Chhun bîn put kak hiáu, Chhú chhù bûn thê niáu.

Iā lâi hong ú siaⁿ, Hoa lo̍k ti to siáu.

I awake light-hearted this morning of spring,

Everywhere round me the singing of birds --

But now I remember the night, the storm,

And I wonder how many blossoms were broken.
