利格特最初在科洛斯堡(克盧日, 特蘭西瓦尼亞, 羅馬尼亞)的音樂學院接受音樂訓練。他的教育在1943年中斷, 作為一個猶太人, 他被迫為納粹工作。他的父母, 兄弟和其他親屬被驅逐到奧斯威辛集中營。
他被認為是20世紀古典音樂著名的作曲家之一。他最著名的作品是歌劇萊格蘭德群魔亂舞。另外一些知名爲衆喜歡的電影配樂如2001年的太空奧德賽(Space Odyssey)和大開眼(Eyes Wide Shut)。
